Virtual Elements

You can position a floating element relative to a virtual element instead of a real one. This enables things like positioning context menus or following the cursor.

Usage

A virtual element is a plain object that has a getBoundingClientRect method, which mimics a real element's one:

// A virtual element which is 20 x 20 px, starting from (0, 0)
const virtualEl = {
  getBoundingClientRect() {
    return {
      x: 0,
      y: 0,
      top: 0,
      left: 0,
      bottom: 20,
      right: 20,
      width: 20,
      height: 20,
    };
  },
};
 
computePosition(virtualEl, floatingEl);

A point reference, such as a mouse event, is one such use case:

contextElement

An extra property can be specified on a virtual element:

const virtualEl = {
  getBoundingClientRect() {
    return {
      // ...
    };
  },
  contextElement: document.querySelector('#context'),
};

This may be required if your virtual element's getBoundingClientRect data is derived from a real element's one. For instance, you're modifying a real reference element's getBoundingClientRect in some way, and using a virtual element enables this.
